Parents of Gender Non-Conforming Children Speak Out For Tolerance

Sample Letters thanking the Nice Companies who pulled support from KRXQ

Using the newly posted dandy live mailto links, I sent this letter off to the companies that pulled out of KRXQ. It took about five minutes using the links. Well worth it.

To (Company name here)

As a concerned parent of a gender-non-conforming child, I wanted to thank you for pullling your ad support from KRXQ radio in response to Ron and Arnie’s comments regarding gender variant children. The family and friends of gender minorities will not tolerate the kind of hatred, and incitement to commit acts of violence which were part of the KRXQ broadcast.

You company acted quickly, and pressured KRXQ to issue, at long last, something that looks like a real apology.
We request that any return to doing business with KRXQ await the proof that this apology is real, and not a self-serving lie designed to lure back sponsors.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter,
(My Name and address)

A more generic letter, for those in a ‘cut and paste’ sort of mood, follows.

To (Company name here)

I wanted to thank you for pullling your ad support from KRXQ radio in response to Ron and Arnie’s comments regarding gender variant children. There is simply no reason to tolerate the kind of hatred, and incitement to commit acts of violence which were part of the KRXQ broadcast.

Author Ann Philips Letter to Mr. Geary

Dear Mr. Geary,
I am shocked by the hateful words of Rob and Arnie on the recent Rob, Arnie, and Dawn show.  As a former therapist and the author of a children’s book addressing gender issues and the targeting of children who are perceived to be different, I can attest to the daily ordeals that young people suffer inside and outside of school. Bullying, threats, violence, depression and suicide are the all-too-serious consequences of the prejudices against gender difference.
Rob and Arnie’s vicious attitudes condone and promote violence against young people, increasing the overall climate of aggressisveness and intolerance in our society. It’s tragic — for the kids and for those of us who parent and care about them.

Letters to Sponsors: To State Farm Insurance

Dear Ms. Fones:
As a decades-long customer of State Farm Insurance, it is my hope that you will remove your sponsorship from KRXQ Sacramento.
During a May 28 show, one of the three hosts on KRXQ’s “Rob, Arnie & Dawn” show said he would hit his son with his shoe if he put on high heels.  Another said he would tell a boy he was “a little idiot” if he asked to wear a dress.  They went on to encourage violence against any child that did not conform to their idea of gender norms.
These guys figured they could call us, the parents of non-conforming children, rotten worthless, weak and crazy—and get away with it. They didn’t need to apologize.  Rather, they went on to say the next day that it was just a joke.  The station manager has refused to reprimand them.
It is NEVER justified to encourage bigotry and violence against children.  Inciting violence is NOT a joke.
I certainly hope that State Farm Insurance does not condone such actions.

Out of concern for our children's safety, all names used in this blog are pseudonyms. None of the parent's voices here have ever been a part of a national dialog on this issue; we have been narrowly focused on our own situations, trying to maintain a degree of privacy for our children. Some of us now feel compelled to speak, to dispel some of the ignorance surrounding this topic. Comments will be moderated; disrespectful and violent comments will be deleted and in the case of messages with violent intent, all relevant documentation will be sent to the appropriate authorities.
